3 WAYS TO COMBAT FEAR AND OWN YOUR MASTERY

The thought that we become what we think about all the time reminds me that starts as a thought then becomes a feeling and an action. But what triggers these thoughts and why do the negative thoughts tend to stick and overwhelm us? Research from ……. States that we produce over 6000 thoughts daily and surprisingly, 95% of these thoughts are negative. Why?

Surprisingly, this is because the sub-conscious brain is trying to protect us from the unknown and classifies your daily thoughts as a no-go area. This is how thoughts become fear.

Fear gets to the best of us, whether it is fear of failure, fear of success, fear of death, fear of loss of a loved one, fear of ill health, fear of being judged or even fear of fear. All of us experience fear at some point in our lives and it can be a real stumbling block from trying new things, believing in yourself and this holds us back from being truly successful.

But did you know that success only comes as a result of overcoming fear? Using the simple AKA framework here are my top three simple steps to overcome fear from holding you back from achieving extraordinary success.

  1. AWARENESS

On a piece of paper, list all the fears that tend to emerge in your thoughts and separate reality from perception. Ask yourself what is really going on here and identify the triggers or situations that bring these thoughts to your mind.

Learning to identify places, people or moments that trigger these feelings is a first major step to applying your rational mind to the problem, rather than an impulse thought that you may regret later.

Where does fear live in your body? A lot of times, fear takes over physically. It affects different people different ways. Identify if/how it affects your physical body and do the work to take care of your body. Ex: if you hold stress in your back, you can learn stretches, foam rolling, etc. to avoid the pain.

  1. KNOWELEDGE

Now that you know, how fear manifests, list the top 3 fears that tend to show up most often and rate it on a scale of (lowest) 1 – 5 (highest) and the risk they present to achieving your top 3 wildest dreams?

Fear is a risk that is likely to materialize like in any business so the prudent thing to do is develop a mitigation plan to ensure this risk reduces from highlight likely to occur to immaterial.

It is in listing all your fears and developing risk mitigation options against each risk that you acquire the knowledge and power to overcome this risk.

  1. ACTION

Success is on the opposite side of failure, and you have the duty and responsibility to achieve success. Here you convert you risk map in step 2 above into an action plan that you must commit to implementing least you live in fear and live a life of regret.

For example, if your dream is to become an international speaker, yet you tend to think about fear of failure on stage.

Start by creating a positive association of the thought to your big dream and start with the end in mind. Create a vision board that helps you visualize what success would like and have this as your screen saver.

Develop a list of 3 things that you will start doing today to overcome this fear, for example practicing your pitch daily to ensure your message is succient enough, putting yourself on smaller stages so you become used to crowds and reduce stage flight, getting a coach to train you on how to overcome fear.

Monitor your inner conversations. If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself. Speak positively to yourself and remind yourself of your strengths.

Perception is a very powerful thing, and how you feel about your situation dictates how you respond. So think positively and you’ll give yourself a much better chance of success. This won’t happen overnight; practice with just one thought. What is one recurring negative/fearful thought you have? Work on reversing this one thought every quarter and with time your list will be gone.

Lastly, get an accountability partner to walk with you on this journey. You cannot be the judge and the jury, therefore find a coach or a friend you trust to give you the sense of comfort and reassurance.

The AKA framework can be applied in every hustle that you face in life and keep you on track to achieve your goals without distraction from the internal mind or external environment.  Nothing changes until you start implementing these techniques into your life and don’t let fear hold you back from reaching your big hairy and audacious goals.

You are destined for greatness and your highest potential can only be realized if you action your plan into reality.
